The Abhayaranyam project was started in the year 2011 on 18th February. This project was meant for rescuing and rehabilitation of wild animals from other parts of the state. It is spread across 200 acres of land in Kaprikkad, Kodanad.
Presently there are 100 Spotted deers, Sambar deers and young elephants rehabilitated from Kodanad elephant training center. Scientifically both these species of deer belong to the family of Cervidae and are of the order Artiodactyla.
Spotted deers
Spotted deer are also called 'chital'.This species of deer are very much common in India. It's a deer of open country too.These deers prefer deciduous forests and avoids dense forests.
Describing more about the species, it's coat is reddish fawn marked with white spots. The belly, underside of the tail, insides of the legs and portion between thighs and buttocks are white. Chital mainly consumes grass, herbs, sedges, browse in the form of leaves, flowers, fruits of shrubs, trees and climbers.
Sambar deers
It is the largest Indian deer .These deers are mostly seen in the forested regions of the country such as Evergreen forests, Coniferous forests, Deciduous forests, Broadleaf Deciduous forests, Broadleaf Evergreen forests and grasslands.
The Sambar deers has its antlers large spread and its coat is uniformly dark brown in color.It consumes a large variety of vegetation including grass, foliage, browse, fruit and water plants.
Elephants
The forest officials made clear that the 100 acres out of 200 adjacent to the river bank will be allotted for the Elephants. Thus making their accommodation more comfortable than before.
This project is still under development. Walking trails has been constructed but neither guides nor sign boards are there since it has not been officially declared for tourists.
